And now for some of your comments.

In reference to collecting metal, including smashed tin cans, one man told me the price of admission to the Saturday matinee in his town was either 10 cents or 3 smashed cans. If he and his buddies didn’t have enough cans of their own, they could always find some from the neighbors.

Another man shared his father’s experience in the war industry. He temporarily left the family for most of the week, rented an apartment close to an area of defense factories, and worked 12-hour shifts for 6 days a week, returning home for one day each week.

Another person said she has in her home a vase from Hitler’s Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden, Germany. It was taken by her uncle when the Allies captured the area.

Another man told me that he had enlisted while still in high school. He served in both Europe and in the Pacific, coming home three years later. He was permitted to go back to school for classes only but he had to leave the school property when his classes ended. He said he was considered too “worldly” for the students. He didn’t think that was the case.

A former WAVE spoke about the reasons some of her acquaintances joined the military. Of course, some joined out of patriotism which was in full bloom in the country at that time. Others were adrift, trying to find a man or a career. Nurses and others with particular skills were serving where they knew the need would be great. Others were escaping broken romances, and some joined the military - just for a lark.
